Day Hike Tibet Tour to Pabonka

Our Tibetan tour guide and two travelers started their hiking trip from the 4-star Shambhala Hotel after breakfast on the morning of April 26th. They traveled by vehicle for about 30 minutes to reach Pabonka Monastery, the starting point of the hike.

Pabonka is historically known as the meditation site of King Srongtsen Gampo in the 7th century, and it is believed to have been built before the Potala Palace. One of its main shrines is dedicated to the Compassion Buddha. There is a large stupa and a meditation cave for visitors to explore. Since the hike from Pabonka involves a steady climb, we recommend that travelers have a good level of fitness before choosing this hiking route in Tibet.

There was a quaint little monastery nestled between Pabonka and the nunnery, making it a lovely spot to pause and catch your breath after an exciting hike through the beautiful mountains of Lhasa.

After approximately 2 hours of hiking from Pabonka Monastery, travelers will reach a nunnery nestled in the high mountains of Lhasa. This Tibet travel trekking route offers views of the stunning western part of Lhasa City.

Day Hike Tibet Tour to Nunnery

The inaugural hike was in 2016, accompanied by a Malaysian traveler. It was quite challenging at that time. This time, after several hours of trekking, we are able to observe the Pabonka Valley beneath the surrounding landscape, making the day hike in Tibet a wonderful experience.

The primary deity in the nunnery was Dorje Naljorma, Vajra Yogini. It is believed to be the fastest spiritual practice within Vajrayana.

After approximately 2-3 hours of hiking from the nunnery, travelers will arrive at Sera Utse, also called the Upper Sera monastery, which has historically served as the meditation site for masters such as Tsongkhapa and many others.

Day Hike Tibet Tour Extend

The first is to extend your hike by visiting Dode Valley, where you'll find two other monasteries to explore, a visit that takes about 3-4 hours. After exploring Dode Valley, you can take a bus or vehicle back to the hotel. The second option is to hike down from Sera Utse directly to the Sera Monastery below, and then take a vehicle back to the hotel.
