Music is an essential part of daily life for Tibetans! Many locals can sing without formal training; the reason may be the fresh, cool water that comes straight from the high snow-capped mountains. Tibetans love music, and our ancestors, the Yogis, have a tradition of teaching the Dharma through singing doha songs. Dramnyen (Tibetan-style Guitar), Piwang Yangching (piano), and Lingbu (Flute) are necessary musical instruments.

1. Rap Music Journey

My Hip-hop journey started in 2002 at the North Face base camp of Mount Everest, at 5,200 meters. Hip-hop was my only friend when I felt emotional and lonely. Sometimes, I wish I could meet my friends because they are far from the base camp of Mount Everest. Only hip-hop keeps me on track, and it's a blessing. A few of my favorite hit songs from that time were "All I Have" by Jennifer Lopez and LL Cool J, "Dilemma" by Nelly featuring Kelly, "Lose Yourself" by Eminem, and "In Da Club" by 50 Cent.

Back in 2003, CD players were all the rage! While I can’t pick up new music CDs at the Mount Everest North Face base camp, I do my best to earn some money so I can buy hip-hop CDs from the fantastic travelers and friendly Sherpas who visit base camp while trekking and climbing the majestic Mount Everest. It’s always a little adventure to find some great tunes!

In 2005, I began writing rhymes while working as a local Tibetan tour guide at the oldest China-Tibet tourism agency in the area, the FIT Banakshol Office. One night stands out in my memory when I was inspired to create a rhyme about a love story shared by a friendly stranger I met at Mount Kailash.

Back then, the Mount Kailash area didn’t have electricity, so I would light a candle in a cozy family guesthouse near Mapham Yumtso Lake, also known as Manasarovar Lake. As I wrote, I would listen to the beautiful sounds of the wind outside, and even now, that memory fills me with such warmth and beauty. It was romantic!

In 2006, I had the joy of writing many songs, including “Tibetan Hip-hop,” “One Day,” “Regret,” “Wheel of Life,” and “Tibetan Girl.” You can find most of my music on YouTube! I believe in promoting peace, happiness, and love through my Hip-hop tunes, and I hope they resonate with you.

In 2006, Bradley Mayhew interviewed MC Tenzin for the Lonely Planet Tibet Guidebook about the nightlife in Tibet; this information can be found on page 74 of the 2010 edition of the guidebook. I appreciate your attention to my article detailing my musical journey as Mc Tenzin.

2. Music Album 2010

In 2006, I had the fantastic opportunity to work as a sales manager at China International Travel Service (CITS) Shigatse. In 2010, I poured all my earnings from that year into creating a Tibetan rap and hip-hop music album. I wrote, produced, and released the music video album, and it brings me so much joy to know that I accomplished something exceptional!
