Have you heard of the Saga Dawa festival? It's also known as Buddha's auspicious day, and it's celebrated in Tibet on the 15th day of the fourth month in the Tibetan lunar calendar. The word "Saga" means fourth, and "Dawa" means month. It's an extraordinary celebration!



1. Why Saga Dawa is important?

It is an extraordinary time because it's all about celebrating Buddha Shakyamuni! This is the month when he first came to our world, became enlightened, and passed into Parinirvana. It's a time to remember and honor his incredible teachings and presence.

During many festivals, people tend to indulge in consuming meat and alcohol and playing games. However, during the festival, Buddhists refrain from such activities as they believe it creates negative karma. Instead, they focus on meditation, reading scripture, and giving alms or money to beggars, with the intention of training their minds with compassion. This is the beauty of the festival. It is significant for Buddhists as it is the time when three essential festivals for followers of Buddha, Shakyamuni, occur in a single month.

5. One best Tibet travel destinations.

Saga Dawa festival is often celebrated at Mount Kailash, which is a popular travel destination. During the fourth month of the Tibetan Lunar Calendar, on the 15th day, many Tibetans will gather at the Prayer flag pole located near Darchen town at Tarboche to commemorate the occasion.

6. Dates of Saga Dawa festival.

Starting on May 15th in the year 2024, our 16-day tour will celebrate the Saga Dawa festival, which falls on the full moon day of May 23rd.

The full moon day of June 11th, 2025, will mark the celebration of the Saga Dawa festival. Similarly, the full moon day of May 31st, 2026, will also be celebrated as the Saga Dawa festival. In 2027, the full moon day of June 18th will be celebrated as the Saga Dawa festival.
