Tibet Tour: Hiking Mt. Jomo Gangkar & Lake + Shug La 5411 m

Tibet Tour: Hiking Mt. Jomo Gangkar & Lake + Shug La 5411 m! Mount Jomo Gangkar's main peak reaches 7048 meters. At its base lies a sacred lake, which we call Qong Mu Lake (its waters change color with the seasons and weather). Mount Jomo Gangkar is a sacred mountain with a long history.

This Tibet Tour hike adventure offers an ideal opportunity to connect with nature and align your inner and outer energies. The highest elevation reached is the Shug La Pass at 5411 meters, one of the highest points on the Tibet tours.

Also known as Jomo Ganggar, its name signifies “Goddess of Wisdom” in Tibetan and it is one of the Twelve Protective Deities of the Tibetan Plateau. Let us explore the article for further details.

Starting at the foot of the parking area, the Tibet tour hike takes about 1 hour uphill and 20-30 minutes downhill, for a total of roughly 1.5 hours. The highest point is approximately 5300 meters, where we can visit the meditation caves of great masters.

It’s an ideal day for hiking amid snow-capped mountains, lakes, and the sounds of singing birds.

Historical records state that Mount Jomo Gangkar was originally a demoness. When the great master Padmasambhava traveled from India through Tibet, the demoness tried to harm him with magic. She tried to attack him with a stream of esoteric practices, but she could not affect him.

The demoness fled into the lake, and the great master Padmasambhava followed her. The demoness pleaded for mercy, confessing her evil deeds, and promising to protect all living beings. Master Padmasambhava then tamed her and converted her into a protector deity. After subduing her, he subsumed her into the mountain, leaving only her eyes. The demoness then promised to guard the sacred mountain.

The Holy mountain is associated with another mountain named “Dangzhag Guna Menpo” (Garna Nabo Sharnged Dorje Chang Meag). They have a son and a daughter named “Churi Mupo” and “Lhau Shalkar”. To the left lies a mountain called “Tsa”. This mountain is also known as “The One-Eyed Vara Mother Weather Goddess”.

Here, besides the snow mountain and sacred lake, there are also “Zazha Kongpu”, the meditation cave of Master Padmasambhava, and stone slab meditation caves of successive Dharma kings. The meditation cave of the successive Dharma kings contains sixteen stone pillars that represent successive generations of Dharma kings.

There is a charming small statue of Milarepa in the meditation cave, where visitors can seek blessings and find inspiration.

There are around three cherished meditation caves connected with revered masters such as Padmasambhava and Karmapa. During the Tibet tour adventure, meditation is a profound gift, practiced amid natural surroundings near lakes, snow-capped mountains, and the meditation caves of eminent masters. This experience is an unparalleled gift to ourselves, as the energy we encounter is immense.

A rock called “Gepai Marima” is a treasure of ancient Qinghai. This rock has a unique characteristic: it cannot be drenched by summer rain and will not accumulate snow in winter. In the Treasure King Rock, there is a hole. Through this hole, you can see the evil karma of your past lives. If your evil karma is heavy, your body cannot drill through that hole.

Additionally, on the sacred mountain, there is a treasure vase named “Siqu Pumba.” Legend says you must walk around it three times. Infertile women and those who have suffered miscarriages can have a smooth pregnancy and delivery.
