Tibet winter travel update

Winter is a special prime time to travel to Tibet for many Travelers.

The name Tibet is always connected with the snow mountains. Tibet is surrounded by the snowy mountains of the Himalayan range.

On the high mountains, it is possible to witness the beauty of snow all the year.

At the lower places below 4000 meters, we can only witness the beauties of snow during the winter around November to the end of February.

During the wintertime, the temperature will be around minus 13 in the night and the morning. During the day it is quite warm because of closer to the sun.

The temperature in Tibet during winter is not too cold and not too warm as compared to many other cold regions in the world.

Winter in Tibet starts typically from the end of October to the end of March.

Even the tea tents at the Mount Everest North Face are closed around October 23rd. Travelers planning to stay at the Mount Everest region after the October 23rd to the end of March during the winter will have to stay at the Rongbuk monastery guest house.

The Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse

The Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse offers basic rooms without a private bathroom and shower. It is quite cold at night since they don't have a heater in the room. They provide 2-3 blankets.

The Rongbuk Monastery is at an altitude of 5100 meters. The temperature during the night will be around minus 15 during the freezing time.

Travelers will have the option to stay at the lower altitude in Pasum village ( 4500 meters ) in a basic room or New Tingri Pelber town ( 4400 meters ) where there is a 2-star hotel with heating inside the room.

Namtso Lake

Lake Namtso is at an altitude of 4700 meters. The duration from Lhasa to Namtso Lake is 240km one way with 5 hours of driving.

In the year 2018, Namtso Lake is not a favorite Lake for many Travelers. The reason is the road construction and too crowded with day trip big buses of Travelers.

Tibet Travelers don't recommend Namtso Lake for Travelers who prefer only comfortable accommodation and many different choices of food for the tour.

The Lake Namtso has a basic cabin-style room without a private bathroom and shower. The food at the Lake has not so much choice as compared to Lhasa.

Lake Namtso was a popular destination a year ago because of the Mountains nearby and the stars in the night.

It is still possible to witness the beauties of Mountains and stars in the night, but the crowded of tourists and the basic accommodation are a few of the reasons Travelers don't choose the Lake as their favorite.

Namtso Lake will be closed because of snow during the winter from the end of October to the end of March.

Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar

The route to the kora trek around Mount Kailash will be closed during the winter from November end to the end of March because of snow.

Even the Mayum La pass before Lake Manasarovar will be closed sometimes during winter because of the snow.

Western Tibet is best to visit from the beginning of May to the start of October.
