Ultimate Travel Tibet Vista Tour #1 Mt.Kailash Trek Guide

Ultimate Travel Tibet Vista Tour #1 offers a comprehensive guide to the 3-day Mount Kailash trek, with detailed descriptions and stunning photos of a Horse Year Tibet Trek to Mount Kailash in August! The Horse Year is considered the most sacred zodiac year for a Tibet Vista adventure to trek around Mount Kailash, where completing a single circuit is believed to bring 12 times the karmic merit.

Today, we'll offer a comprehensive overview of the three-day Tibet trek around Mount Kailash, highlighting Vista Tour as the latest top Tibet travel guide for this sacred mountain. Let's explore these details together!

One highlight of this three-day Tibet trek was watching the sunset and sunrise near Dirapuk Monastery. This trip provided us with new photos of Mount Kailash from this location.

Before we explore the article, let's take a moment to enjoy some beautiful photos of Mount Kailash from Dirapuk Monastery, captured in May, July, and August.

Previously, we shared three Tibet travel articles featuring stunning photos of Mount Kailash taken by our past travelers.

The Day One trek begins at 4,560 meters in Darchen and ends between 4,950 and 5,080 meters near Dirapuk Monastery. The distance ranges from about 13 to 20 kilometers, depending on whether you choose to take the eco-bus for the first part.

The Tibet Trek from Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery marks the opening day of the 52-kilometer Mount Kailash Outer Kora. It transitions travelers from the lively base camp to the striking, high-altitude wilderness of Western Tibet.

Trek Overview & Key Metrics

  • Distance: About 13 to 20 kilometers, depending on whether you take the eco-bus for the first part.
  • Duration: 5 to 7 hours of consistent walking at a moderate pace.
  • Starting Elevation: 4,560 meters at Darchen.
  • Ending Elevation: Between 4,950 and 5,080 meters at Dirapuk Monastery.

Terrain: A gentle, steady climb through a broad valley floor. While the route is physically accessible without technical skills, the thin air makes every step require conscious effort.

The Step-by-Step Route

[ Darchen ] ---> (Eco-Bus / Hike) ---> [ Yam Dwar ] ---> (Lha Chu Valley Trek) ---> [ Dirapuk Monastery]

(4,560m)                               (4,750m)

1. The Starting Line: Darchen to Yam Dwar (Tarboche)

The day begins early in Darchen, with most trekking groups taking a short 6 to 7-kilometer eco-bus or vehicle ride to Yam Dwar (the Gateway of the Gods) at Tarboche Square. This marks the start of the official foot-trekking section of the Kora. The area buzzes with colorful prayer flags and local pilgrims seeking final blessings before beginning the circuit. It’s also the main spot to hire yaks or porters if needed.

2. Through the Lha Chu Valley

From Yam Dwar, the trail descends into the stunning, rugged Lha Chu Valley. The path winds alongside a pristine glacier-fed river, bordered by towering, steep rock faces. As you head north, the Western Face of Mount Kailash gradually comes into view over the ridges. On the valley floor, you'll pass nomadic herders, grazing yaks, and wild marmots on the Travel Tibet Vista Tour Mount Kailash Trek.

3. The Choku Monastery Break

About halfway through the day's trek, you’ll see Choku Monastery perched high on the cliffs across the river. Most groups stop at a nearby local tented tea house beneath the cliffs to rest, enjoy some noodle soup or hot tea, and recharge for the final stretch.

4. The Grand Reveal at Dirapuk

The last part follows the river as it curves closer to the mountain. After crossing one last bridge, you arrive at Dirapuk Monastery. Situated directly opposite the magnificent North Face of Mount Kailash, it offers the best vantage point of the entire journey. At sunset, if the sky is clear, the setting sun bathes the icy pyramid of the North Face in glowing golden light.

5. Accommodation & Logistics

Stay: Overnight lodging at Dirapuk is limited; trekkers rest in basic stone guesthouses or mud lodges near the monastery. Amenities: Facilities are rustic, with shared rooms, electric blankets (when power is available), and outdoor drop toilets. Bring a heavy-duty sleeping bag for cold nights.

Significance: Adequate rest is vital here, as Day 2 starts with a steep ascent to the challenging Dolma La Pass (5,630m). If you're creating a marketing feature for this trek day, tell me if you want a detailed day-by-day highlight brief for brochures or photo-caption pairs for landmarks like Yam Dwar or the North Face sunset.

Total expected walking time is 5-7 hours at a comfortable, moderate pace. The terrain features a gentle, steady climb along a broad valley floor. While the path isn’t technically difficult, the thin air requires mindful, steady effort with each step.

Starting from Tarchen, the trail heads east toward the Dirapuk monastery. Along the way, we will enjoy a breathtaking view of Mount Kailash, as highlighted by Travel Tibet Vista Tours.

Next, we will visit Dirapuk Monastery. In August, the weather is lovely and the landscape is lush, making it an ideal time to take the Travel Tibet Vista Tour Mount Kailash Trek.

Although many travelers visit during the peak season from June to September, this year was particularly busy because it was the Year of the Horse, the birth year of Mount Kailash.

As a result, the mountain was packed with tourists. Many local Tibetan travel agencies arranged the Tibet Vista Tour Mount Kailash Trek during this Year of the Horse.

On this Travel Tibet Vista Tour Highlights, visiting Dirapuk Monastery is a great choice, especially because the view of Mount Kailash from there is breathtaking.

The Day 2 Tibet trek begins in Dirapuk. The Tibet trek from Dirapuk Monastery to Zutrulpuk Monastery is the second day of the 52-kilometer Mount Kailash Outer Kora, the most physically demanding and most spiritually meaningful day.

It takes you to the highest point of the pilgrimage, 5600 meters at Drolma La Pass, before descending into the eastern valley on the Travel Tibet Vista Tour Mount Kailash Trek.

Trek Overview & Key Metrics

  • Distance: approximately 18 to 22 kilometers.
  • Duration: an adventurous 7 to 9 hours of challenging hiking.
  • Starting Elevation: 5,080 meters at Dirapuk Monastery.
  • Peak Elevation: 5,630 meters at Dolma La Pass.
  • Ending Elevation: 4,790 meters at Zutrulpuk Monastery.

Terrain: A steep, rocky trail with exciting high-altitude switchbacks up to the pass, followed by a steep, boulder-strewn descent that leads to a beautiful river valley.

The Step-by-Step Route

[ Dirapuk ] ---> ( Steep Ascent ) ---> [ Dolma La Pass ] ---> ( Steep Descent ) ---> [ Gauri Kund ] ---> ( Valley Hike ) ---> [ Zutrulpuk ]

(5,080m)                              (5,630m)                                     (Emerald Lake)                         (4,790m)

1. The Ascent to Dolma La Pass (The Ultimate Test)

The day begins prior to dawn amidst the frigid air of Dirapuk. The trail commences its incline immediately. This segment is both emotionally and physically demanding, subdivided into three stages, locally referred to as the three levels of purification. The scenery transitions from alpine meadows into a stark, lunar landscape composed of ice, slate, and rock.

The summit of Dolma La Pass (5,630m) is entirely adorned with countless vibrant prayer flags, fluttering in the wind, left by pilgrims. For many, reaching this pass signifies a spiritual rebirth and the purification of previous karma.

2. The Steep Descent and Gauri Kund

Immediately after the pass crossing, the trail descends sharply along a rocky, demanding path that requires careful footing (trekking poles are strongly advised). To the right, you can see Gauri Kund (The Lake of Compassion), a mesmerizing, sacred lake with emerald-green waters nestled among high glacial cliffs on the Travel Tibet Vista Tour Mount Kailash Trek.

3. Shabiye Do and the Eastern Valley Floor

After approximately one hour of challenging descent, the trail levels out at Shabiye Do, a level area where modest tented tea houses are operational. Here, trekkers pause to recover their breath, enjoy hot noodle soup, and rest their knees. From this point onward, the remaining ten kilometers proceed along a gentle, pleasing downhill slope.

4. Arrival at Zutrulpuk Monastery

The day concludes at Zutrulpuk Monastery, also known as the Cave of Miracles. This monastery is constructed around a historic cave where the renowned Tibetan saint and yogi Milarepa once stayed. Legend says he directly moved the large stones of the cave ceiling with his bare hands to protect himself from a storm.

5. Accommodation & Logistics

Stay: Nearby simple guesthouses near the monastery offer shared, unheated rooms with rustic plumbing, similar to Dirapuk.

Preparation: Since temperatures on the pass can drop rapidly and weather can change suddenly, travelers should pack windproof layers, heavy gloves, and proper eye protection to avoid snow blindness.

Total expected walking time is 7-9 hours for challenging hiking, as you'll need to cross three passes totaling approximately 18 to 20 km.

The most remarkable sunrise on the Tibet trek comes after crossing the Digpa La Pass. In Tibetan, Digpa means 'evil karmic,' and La means 'pass.' Near Digpa La Pass, several guest houses and tea houses are available, symbolizing the purification of negative karmic debts, as some beliefs suggest that crossing this pass helps cleanse them.

Near these sites, visitors may witness the spiritual acts of the esteemed Tibetan Yogi Milarepa.

Next, travelers reach Tor Tru La, which translates to 'sky burial pass,' followed by Drolma La Pass. During the journey, travelers observe monks circumambulating counterclockwise, consistent with Bon religious practices.

Ultimate Travel Tibet Vista Tour #1 Mt.Kailash Trek Guide

Starting from the Tor Tru La, the Tibet trek trail ascends to over 5000 meters altitude. This is the most challenging day of the three-day trek around Mount Kailash, as the entire day involves uphill climbing. We strongly advise bringing oxygen, as it can significantly aid your breathing.

These Tibet tour photos are from August. During the previous Travel Tibet Vista Tour to Mount Kailash in May, many travelers, especially OCI Indians on the Mount Kailash Yatra pilgrimage, took horseback rides along this pass.

There is an option to hire a horse ride for travelers who prefer not to trek to the summit of Drolma La Pass at 5600 meters. Each horse ride costs about 150-250 USD, plus an additional fee for the horseman.

From the summit of Drolma La Pass, at an elevation of 5600 meters, you'll be greeted by numerous prayer flags from devoted pilgrims, adding a colorful, spiritual touch to the breathtaking natural scenery. Mount Kailash is not visible because the nearby mountains are also huge and at very high altitudes.

After crossing the Drolma La Pass, we will observe the view of Drolma Lake, recognized as the spiritual lake of the female Buddha Drolma in Buddhism and also referred to as the Lake of Parvati (Consort of Lord Shiva) in Hinduism.

Ultimate Travel Tibet Vista Tour #1 Mt.Kailash Trek Guide

During the Tibet tour to Mount Kailash in May, the lake was not visible because it hadn't rained; however, in August, it appeared beautifully. As a result, each month offers a distinct natural view of Mount Kailash and its surroundings.

Near Zutrulpuk Tibet Trek

After the blessings from the Lake, the trail becomes much easier and smoother, with no more steep uphill sections. There’s a cozy tea house right at the foot of the pass where you can enjoy some tea, and then it’s all downhill all the way to Zutrul Puk Monastery.

Near Zutrulpuk Tibet Trek

When you arrive at Zutrul Puk monastery, we warmly recommend exploring the meditation cave of the revered Yogi Milarepa. It’s a special place where Tibetan Yogis from Buddhist and Bon traditions demonstrated their incredible spiritual power. The name 'Zutrul' means 'Spiritual power,' and 'Puk' translates to 'cave,' highlighting the profound energy contained within. The meditation cave itself was created with this spiritual energy, making it a truly meaningful site to visit.

The third and final day of the Tibet trek from Zutrulpuk Monastery to Darchen on Mount Kailash’s Outer Kora is also the easiest, covering 14km of the total 52km. After the challenging days, this section offers a more relaxed, celebratory walk that concludes the sacred circuit of the Travel Tibet Vista Tour Mount Kailash Trek.

Trek Overview & Key Metrics

  • Distance: About 11 to 14 kilometers, depending on where your pickup vehicle meets you.
  • Duration: 3 to 4 hours of gentle downhill walking.
  • Starting Elevation: 4,790 meters at Zutrulpuk Monastery.
  • Ending Elevation: 4,560 meters at Darchen.

Terrain: Smooth, gradual downhill dirt road and gravel trail following the Dzong-chu river canyon, opening up to the Barkha Plain.

 The Step-by-Step Route

[ Zutrulpuk ] ---> (Gentle Gorge Walk) ---> [ Tangser / Mani Wall ] ---> (Eco-Bus / Hike) ---> [ Darchen ]

  (4,790m)                                   (Barkha Plain View)                                (4,560m)

1. The Morning Farewell at Zutrulpuk

The day begins at a relaxed pace. Many trekkers take a final look inside Zutrulpuk Monastery to see the renowned "Cave of Miracles" and the rock indentations linked to yogi Milarepa.

2. Trekking through the Dzong-chu Canyon

The trail gently follows the clear waters of the Dzong-chu River. The colorful cliffs on either side display distinct layers of red, gold, and grey rock. The path is broad, flat, and easier on the knees compared to the previous day's steep descent. Along the way, you'll pass pilgrims performing their final prostrations on the Travel Tibet Vista Tour Mount Kailash Trek.

3. Entering the Barkha Plain (Tangser)

After 2 to 3 hours, the narrow canyon suddenly broadens into a vast view of the Barkha Plain. Here, you can see Lake Manasarovar shimmering in the distance and Mount Gurla Mandhata's snow-capped peak on the horizon. This area is characterized by ancient Mani stone walls carved with prayers.

4. The Final Leg to Darchen

Near a checkpoint called Tangser, the official trekking concludes.

Option A: Support vehicles or eco-buses waiting here can take you the remaining 4 to 5 kilometers back to Darchen.

Option B: Alternatively, you can walk the flat final stretch along the plain into town.

Reaching Darchen signifies the official end of the Mount Kailash Kora—an important spiritual and personal achievement of the Travel Tibet Vista Tour Mount Kailash Trek.
